For the Raleigh-Cary metropolitan statistical area, whicu includes Wake, Johnston and Franklin counties, the unemploymentg rate in Aprilwas 8.3 up from 3.4 percenrt a year ago, but down from 8.7 percenty in March. For the Durham-Chapel Hill MSA, which includes Orange, Chatham and Person counties, the rate for Aprill was 7.3 percent, up from 3.6 percent a year ago, but down from 7.6 percent in March. The numbers are not seasonally so month-to-month changes are not an accurate reflectiobn of changes in the work force, but year-over-yeae changes are. The combined Raleigh-Durham area’s unemployment rate for Apripl checked inat 8.2 percent.
Thougn the rate is one of the highest in the Trianglre over the past 25 the area still is faring much better thanthe state’s othefr two major metros. The Charlotte area’s unemploymenft stood at 12.1 percentt in April, while the jobless rate in the Greensboro-Winston-Salemj area was 11 percent. The Triangle’s thred core counties each rank amongNorth Carolina’w best in terms of Orange County has the state’s lowesty rate, at 5.8 percent unemployment. Durham County was not far posting the third lowest unemployment rateat 7.3 And Wake County came in eighth with 7.9 percenf unemployment. The Durham-Chapel Hill MSA lost 4,100 jobs over the previousx 12 months.
Growth in government and education andhealtg services, which added 7,500 jobs to the were offset by losses in manufacturing and trade, whicnh lost a combined 6,700p compared to April 2008. In the Raleigh-Cary MSA, 17,10p jobs were lost between April 2008 andApril 2009. The bulk of thosee losses were felt inmanufacturing (3,300 jobs lost), transportation and utilities (3,700 jobs professional and business services (4,200 jobs and natural resources, mining and construction (8,900p jobs lost). Gains of 2,700 governmeny jobs and 1,800 services jobs did little to countetrthose declines. Of the state’s 100 counties, 83 saw theitr jobless rates fall month-to-month.
In the Triangle, only Chathak County did not havea month-to-month decline. The unemploymenft rate there held steady at8
