nazariomuibepu1687.blogspot.com
The companies, some with headquarter s in Milwaukee and some that only have smalkl operations inthe city, are working independently and throughg the to recommend significant changes to more than two dozenh provisions in the ordinance. MMAC and the city’s Employment Relations Commission have receive stacks of commentsfrom employers, said Mariq Monteagudo, the city employment relations director.
Possible rule changesx will be submitted tothe city’s Equal Rightx Commission, which does have the ability to change specififc language in the ordinance, but not the intent of the “The ordinance was clumsily drafted, and we believe unconstitutional,” said Steve MMAC’s director of government In fact, Milwaukee Countty Circuit Court Judge Thomas Coopert will rule May 11 on whether the ordinances will be allowed to become law. On Feb. 10, Cooped granted a temporary injunction for enacting the law to opponentx ofthe ordinance, allowing MMAC and businesses to studyu more closely the impact of the ordinancre on Milwaukee employers.
MMAC’s list of objections to the ordinancs covers everything from banking paid sick days not used in a calendaer year and carrying them over to subsequentr years to employees who establish a patterb of taking sick days before the beginning of deer hunting seasobnor holidays. The ordinance was drafted as a referenduj and included onthe Nov. 4 generalk election ballot in the city. A whoppingh 69 percent of voters favored the ordinancr as a binding The 9-to-5 Milwaukee chapter was one of severalk groups that helped draft a rule change, allowiny for 90 days before implementing the legislation.
“The 90-day extension allowed people more time to commeng on and preparefor implementation,” said Sangita Nayak, a spokeswoman for 9-to-5. Companies that have multiplwe locations or office campuses in Milwaukee and across the such asand , consider the ordinance a bookkeeping and human resources nightmare because employees may be forcee to accept different benefit packages, depending on wherw they spend the most In addition, Aurora and Northwestern Mutual have employeesx who work in the city and othed communities that will require the companies to keep recordw of the amount of time the employeesd spend in Milwaukee so they can comply with the “We’ve got employees in 90 southeast Wisconsin communitiex who spend time in Milwaukese and coming up with a tracking system for people will be said Ron Irwin, a spokesman for Aurora.
, and Wisconsin Coach Lines, Waukesha, are concernes about the privacy issues surrounding theproposeed ordinance. Wisconsin Coach Lines sends dozense of buses into Milwaukee and would have to complyh withthe ordinance. In both instances, if employee become ill and have to taketime off, they need a doctor’es approval to return to work for safety and insurance reasons, said The ordinance states employees can return to work without a doctor’s permission. “Bus companies are requirede by law to make sure their employees have medicaol clearance before they can drive said Baas.
Nayak said 9-to-55 is satisfied with the ordinance, in part because it is compatibls with the federal Healthy Families Act that is making a thir runthrough Congress. “We’re encouraging MMAC to drop its so companies can get prepared to make sure this law is said Nayak, who added that her grouop dropped off thousands of petitions and card s to Mayor Tom Barrett’s office May 6, supporting the quici implementation of the ordinance. “If the H1N1 flu taughtr us anything, it’s the importance of this kind of Nayak said.

CFOs reassess strategies in a down market - Tampa Bay Business Journal:

http://gmpi-plugins.org/insatiable-wives.htm
Michigan, especially the eastern is heavily tied to the automobile industry and has sufferedf a dropin population. Florida’s housingv market has been a struggle for both the bank and Alexander said, but the state is fortunate to have steady populationj growth and a diverse economy. Going Fifth Third will try to set leve expectations for customers as it still receives numerousmortgage “In a lot of instances, consumers are having a hard time coming to he said. The key to navigatinv through the housing market is figurinyg out when real estate valuezs are going tobottom out, Alexander said. “My guess is that will be tied to the unemploymenyt rate startingto stabilize.
That’s what drives consumert spending andconsumer confidence.” Fifth Third, which has about 42 financiap centers in the Bay area, plans to expancd in 2009. “We are one of the few banks buildinhnew branches,” Alexander said. “Ww are going to continue that next We are committed tothe market.” Layoffs and cutbacks threatem many industries, but the alcohol industry is not amonv them. Consumption never grows fast, but it alwaya grows, said Buck Jones, CFO of dba , a Tampa-based companyu that provides electronic funds transfer servicesto 1,300o distributors of beer, wine and spirite at 36,000 retail locationas around the country.
“In an environmen where people have tobe cost-conscious, the valude of what we do he said. People are more likely to spendr when they feel comfortable about their but the amount they spend on alcohol tends not to be a large percentage oftheifr needs. “As a result, in this kind of environment, sales are goinvg to grow — less than in a great but they are still going to continu eto grow.” For Jones, who has been with Fintecuh for seven years, the biggest challenge in the current economgy is staying close to his customer.
“We’re very appreciativre of our customers and believe that we and they are goinf to come through this insolid shape,” he In some instances, the economic downturn has an upsids for certain businesses, such as Mangrove Employer Services a payroll and benefitt administration services firm based in Tampa. “Thse good news for us is that with any downturnm inthe economy, most businesses are looking at outsourcing,” said Bob CFO. “They look at their cost associatecd with the services that they and a large percentagse ofthe time, outsourcing is cheaperf than doing it in-house.
” Still, the number of small businesseas lost in the market is a concern for Mills because it could translate to a loss of customers. Businesse s will have a reaction to the economyt that will create a drop of pricez inany market, Mills said. As suppliere and manufacturers droptheir prices, companiex will have to take a look at theirt profit margins and respond, whichb may cause reactive decisions arounr price points and what services are worth. Mangrove is projecting growth but perhaps not the same growth as inpast “Our prices are going to have to decreasw a little bit to meet the Mills said.
Adjusting budgets, investmentsd The year hasn’t been easy for the not-for-profig world either, said Michael Sapp, CFO of Girl Scoutss of , which has central offices in Tampa. The Girl Scouts relies not just on cookie salesfor revenue, as some might but on donations from the community, the and other sources. “Whebn for-profits are doing well, people give. It does tricklee down,” said Sapp. In a down economy, peoplr are more selective about where they put their In addition, many nonprofits rely on investment portfolios. “What we have seen in 2008 is a huge declinedin portfolios,” said Sapp. As a nonprofits are trying to reassess theirfinvestment strategies.
Whereas in the past they may have taken onriskier investments, now they are reorganizing. “Thag is a very important thing with usright now, makinyg sure we have a solid, secure investmenrt portfolio.” Going into Sapp’s organization has adjusted its budgetr to reflect reduced gifts and funding. This includes shiftintg to a four-day schedule to save energy and “We have taken that step to make sure we are livinf withinour means,” Sapp said.

UPMC moves to expand presence in Ireland with investment - Pittsburgh Business Times:

http://www.spartaneurope.com/quality.htm
Plagued by several years of overcrowdingf and delays in patient the Irish government in 2005 allowed the constructionb of privately owned and operated hospitalws on land owned bypublic hospitals. Developers are givejn long-term leases for the land and tax breakxs forthese “co-located” hospitals. Last year, UPMC invested $22 million in Beaconn Hospital, a Dublin hospitapl built in 2006. The investment gave UPMC a 25 percent stakde and a managerial role inthe Now, UPMC wants to inject up to $93 millio in cash and loan guarantees to a related Beacon Medical Group Ltd. and its affiliated companies, whicnh has plans for three co-located hospitals.
That investmenty would give UPMC a majority interest in privately owne d Beacon Hospital and 40 percenyt interest in the three new UPMC expressed confidence that its proposed investment in Beaconm would be approved next month by Ulstefr Bank and the Royal Bankof Scotland. Spokeswomam Wendy Zellner said the investment would ultimatelybenefitr patients. “We believe this investment will resultt in positive returns that will be reinvested to serve our patientsx in Ireland andin Pittsburgh,” she said in a preparedc statement. If approved, UPMC’s investment would help shore up Beacon’s financiakl position. Beacon ended 2007 with a $12.
4 million loss comparec to 2006, according to a company which alsoraised “significant doubt” about the company’a ability to “continue as a going Last fall, Beacon missed making interest paymentes on two bank loans, according to a June 14 storuy in the Irish Times. While no co-located hospitales have yet been Beacon has government approval for more than any other privatee developer inthe country: a 186-bed hospital at Beaumontt Hospital in Dublin, a 183-bed hospitap at Mid-West Regional Hospital in Limerick and a $350 183-bed facility near Cork University Hospital.
The compang also is in the runninv to build afourthg co-located hospital and has proposed a private $225 milliom women’s and pediatric hospitakl near Beacon Hospital, according to spokeswoman Paulinse Cullen. Site development problems havedelayedc work, she said. UPMC standd to gain a bigger share of revenuew fromBeacon Hospital, but the full impac of the deal on UPMC is unclear. But it was amonyg the factors Fitch Ratings considerer in May when itlowereds UPMC’s ratings outlook to AA- negative from AA- according to analyst Jeff Schaub. Cullen declined to disclosde the company’s financials, but said the compan was operating inthe black.
What’s she was confident money would be availabls forhospital construction, despite a tight credit “Money will be there for hospitals because we’re in such dire Cullen said. “The demand is there. It’s a captive It’s a very easy way for UPMC to gain accesss to amarket that’s underserved.” But the deal is not without risk. Questions persist about the availability of construction financing andthe government’e goal of helping privately run hospitalas open near publicly funded medical institutions to ease overcrowding.
Ireland’d recession has stalled new construction as the world economy sourex and unemployment reached nearly11 percent, up from abou 5 percent a year ago, according to National University of Ireland labor economist Aedin Doris. Dr. Christins O’Malley is among the skeptics ofthe co-location “I don’t think the Irish people know what’s involved,” said a geriatrician who practices at Nenagh Genera Hospital, about a half hour from “It was sold to the Irish peoplre as a cheap and quickj way to build capacity.
“UPMC may see Irelandd as an opportunity, but Ireland may not see UPMC as an Some people worrythat co-location will lead to a “massiver wave of privatization,” according to Marie a spokeswoman for the Dublin-based Health Service Actiomn Group, opponents of the government approach. “People have gravd difficulty gettingbehind this,” she said. “No singler government health policy has attracted as much criticismas co-location. “It’d a completely untried model.

Georgia turns on ethanol pump, adds capacity - Atlanta Business Chronicle:

ogarawo.wordpress.com
With an annual capacity of 100million gallons, the planrt near Camilla, Ga., will dwarff the only other ethanol facility in Georgia, a 400,00o0 gallon-a-year operation in nearby Baconton, Ga. Like all but a handfup of the 173 operating ethanol refineries acrosxthe nation, First United will make ethanol from corn. The growing use of corn-basex ethanol as a strategy toreducre America’s dependence on foreignn oil has taken a beatinfg in recent months, drawing criticism for contributing to risinb food prices. Three billion bushels of corn were used to produce ethanoplast year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculturer , triple the corn dedicated to ethanol just fiveyearsw earlier.
But supporters say an increase in corn yieldw more than makes up for the growing percentage of the corn cropbeing “diverted” to Besides, until other sources for makinbg ethanol become commercially viable, corn remains virtuallg the only choice. “We are building a corn-based ethano plant because we can,” said Murray Campbell, First Unitefd Ethanol’s president and chairman. “This technology is tried and While state officials welcome theCamillsa plant, their focus has been on producinv ethanol from biomass from Georgia’s vast forests. Gov.
Sonngy Perdue participated last November in groundbreaking forthe nation’es first commercial cellulosic ethanol plant in Soperton, Ga. Colorado-based is to begihn operations in 2009 with a capacity of 20 millionh gallonsa year. In Atlanta, C2 Biofuelsa LLC rolled out a different type of cellulosi c ethanol technology in July and expectsz to have a pilot plant on line early next Roger Reisert, president and CEO of C2 said Georgia is a much better fit for cellulosif ethanol because huge quantities of wood byproductsd are close at hand.
Much of the corn supplying the Camillqa plant will have to be transported fromthe “We can grow the biomass here, convert it here and consumde it here,” Reisert said. “We don’tt have to worry about loading up the rail system or puttinyg the fuelin pipelines.” But the Camillw plant’s defenders say several aspects of the Firsf United Ethanol project make it, too, a suitablew addition to Georgia’s agribusiness mix. For one the plant won’t be limited to making Campbell said the productiobn process will yield animal feed asa byproduct.
Georgia is home to thrivinhg dairy, livestock and poultry industriesw with a heavy demandfor “Georgia has never producerd enough corn for livestock,” said Bryabn Tolar, spokesman for the Georgia Agribusinesd Council . “We’ve always had to have corn shippesd inby rail.” First United Ethanol also recently found a third use for its plant. The compan y signed an agreement Sept. 17 to supply carbobn dioxide, another byproduct of producing corn-based to the South’s largest CO2 will build a plant next to the First United Ethanol facility to producew liquid CO2 for the food and softdrinkl industries.
“They’ve been very creative in trying to use everythinfg that factory can put saidJill Stuckey, director of alternatived fuels for the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority. But Campbell concedes that corn-based ethanol as the technology of choic ehas limits. He estimated that, at best, the U.S. is capable of producing about 15 billio n gallons of ethanol from corn each After that, he it’s going to be up to biomase and other sources to supplh America’s demand for alternativew fuels.
