The Texas Senate passec the TelevisionTakeBack Bill, which require s television manufacturers to provide Texas residente with free and convenient recycling for used TVs. Authoredf by Rep. David Leibowitz of San Antonio and sponsoreddby Sen. Kirk Watson of Austin, the bill followsz one passed in 2007 that set up a recyclingy program for computersand monitors. Older televisions typicallgy contain between four and eight pounds of which can cause health problems when it enters the watefror soil, according to the Texas Campaigmn for the Environment. Meanwhile, newer flat screends contain mercury, and almost all electronics are coatede with brominated fire retardants andother chemicals.
Currenty programs for recycling televisionsxis limited. Goodwill locations acrossx the state will accept old TVs thatstilpl work, but the cost or recycling is sometimezs prohibitive for non-working televisions.
